Swing Weekend
Why not book yourself a fabulous two night break (Friday 25th & Saturday 26th February 2011) at the Cumbria Grand Hotel, Grange Over Sands, Cumbria. Over that weekend Wibble Promotions in association with the Cumbria Grand are putting on a Swing weekend for everyone who loves swing and big band music.
Your Weekend
FRIDAY
On the Friday evening you will be able to get to know the other guests and enjoy an evening of entertainment with a DJ playing swing and jive music for you to dance to plus a live band – The Billionaires.
The Backstep Boogie Club will give some great Dance Demonstrations, showing you paired swing dancing at its best. Get to see great dances to fantastic swing music, which will set the evening off in style. Not only that, but we will perform Stroll Demonstrations too.
Fired up and ready to go? The Backstep Boogie Club will then start you off, to learn a simple Stroll, from the period. You don’t even need a dance partner to get up and enjoy learning this. Then you’re ready to dance all evening.
After that, The Backstep Boogie Club will then go on to teach a number of beginner level paired Swing moves for brand new dancers, so you can dance the night away, even if you’ve never danced before! What’s more, for those of you with some dancing experience already, there’ll be a couple of snazzy moves for you to incorporate into your existing repertoire – something for everyone!
Friday night also brings you live music from The Billionaires, who bring you the best of swing and jump-jive from the likes of Louis Jordan, Louis Prima, Nelly Lutcher, Ruth Brown, Peggy Lee to name a few. All band members have a strong background in this music – band leader Bill played with The Jive Cats in London for 4 years, with performances at the 100 Club and Royal Festival Hall among others. Sax man Paul has toured the UK with the great ‘Kings Of Swing’ big band show. ‘The Billionaires’ play for many private functions, in particular at The Midland Hotel in Morecambe, and they are due to be featured in the C4 TV documentary ‘The Hotel’ filmed at Damson Dene Hotel in the Lake District. The band line-up will be: piano, vocalist, double bass, drums, tenor sax, trumpet.
When the live band aren’t playing The Backstep Boogie Club will DJ the night away for you, playing some of the best Swing music from the period. Dance along to the sounds of artists and musicians such as Louis Armstrong, the Andrews Sisters, Count Basie, Will Bradley, Larry Clinton, Tommy Dorsey, Ella Fitzgerald, Lionel Hampton, Woody Herman, Louis Jordan, Jimmie Lunceford, Gene Krupa, Ray McKinley, Glen Miller, Lucky Millinder, Anita O’Day, Louis Prima and Fats Waller. Get up and party the night away!
SATURDAY
On Saturday morning, to give you your first ‘fix’ of dancing for the day, The Backstep Boogie Club will perform some more great Dance Demonstrations, once again showing a mix of great moves and great style to great music. With different displays to the previous evening, you’ll be wowed once again. Once again, we will also perform Stroll Demonstrations too – again, different to those performed on the previous evening.
Ready to learn some more yourselves? The Backstep Boogie Club will once again start you off, with a different simple Stroll to learn, from the period. Like before, you won’t even need a dance partner in order to strut your stuff. Simply remember this one in order to be able to dance it all Saturday night.
After that, The Backstep Boogie Club will once again go on to teach a number of beginner level paired Swing moves for those of you who are still new to dancing, so you can enjoy dancing at the Saturday night dance even more, even if you only started dancing during the weekend! Not only that, again, for those of you who have been dancing for some time, there’ll be the chance to add to your dance ‘bag of tricks’ even further, with yet more snazzy moves for you to master. So, whatever your dance standard, you’ll be able to learn some fantastic moves.
On Saturday afternoon you can spend time exploring the beautiful town of Grange or relax in the lounge listening to swing and jive music.
After your evening meal there will be time for you to get ready for a night of swing and jive music with the Mike Brown Band (pictured). They are an exceptional 10-piece swing band with a fabulous horn section. They will spend the evening performing all your pop/party, swing and big band classics with a few surprises. This band will keep you on your feet thats for sure. There will also be a disco throughout the evening and prizes for the best dancers with a few surprises thrown in.
Mike Jackson from Wibble Promotions will be there throughout the weekend as your host and to make sure everything goes with a ‘swing’.

The package is £119 – this includes bed, breakfast, evening meal and all entertainment.
